ESM Administrator App

If your web browser does not support Flash, this application gives you access to ESM administration features that have not been migrated from Flash to HTML.

Background

Flash will not work in browsers after the end of 2020. McAfee created a secure desktop application to run Flash so that you can continue to access the ESM functionality that is still in the Flash interface.

ESM versions

The ESM Administrator App supports these ESM versions:

  • 10.4.x
  • 11.3.0
  • 11.3.2
  • 11.4.0 and later

If you are not running one of these versions, you need to upgrade and apply the associated hotfix. ESM 11.4.0 and later versions will include the ESM Administrator Utility until all Flash functionality is migrated.

Installation

Note: The Flash plug-in must be disabled in your browser and you must have administrator rights on the computer you are installing the app on.
  • Version 11.4.0 and later - Installation of the app is part of the initial logon process for new ESM)s. You can delay the installation and an installation wizard walks you through the steps to install it the first time you access an administrative function from the HTML5 interface.
  • Versions 10.4.x, 11.3.0, and 11.3.2 with the associated hotfix - An installation wizard walks you through the steps to install it the first time you access an administrative function from the HTML5 interface.

Using the client

Once it's installed, you can start the ESM Administrator App from your desktop or from a browser.

  • From your desktop - use the Windows Start menu to open the app. You are prompted to enter the IP address of the ESM and your credentials. If you don't want the IP address pre-populated with the address shown, select Forget the ESM address.
  • From the HTML5 interface - when you access an administrative function, ESM starts the app and passes your credentials to it.

You don't need to switch between the app and your browser. The app gives you access to all ESM functions.

Security

The ESM Administrator Utility runs on Windows 10 and Windows Server.

Users need administrator rights to install the ESM Administrator App, but not to run it.

Traffic between the utility and the ESM is secured using HTTPS (TCP/443) using the ESM RESTful API. The utility uses the default Windows proxy settings, so make sure the proxy settings allow access to your ESMs. No additional ports are needed beyond those needed for the HTML5 interface in a browser. All

The ESM Administrator App does not transfer user credentials. It uses a short-term single use token to authenticate a session.
